Royal Opera House to host 2013 Olivier Awards
The Oscars of the theatre world return to Covent Garden next year.
Next year the Royal Opera House is to host the Olivier Awards for the second year running.
The annual ceremony, which will take place on 28 April 2013, attracts stars from across the industry and is a highlight of the theatrical calendar.
Nominees for the awards will be unveiled on 26 March, and productions that open on or before 5 March are eligible for consideration.
Last year, Edward Watson won the award for Most Outstanding Achievement in Dance for his performance in a dance-theatre adaptation of Kafka novella The Metamorphosis. The production will be revived – with Edward Watson again in the central role – in the Linbury Studio Theatre this March. Former Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason was presented with a special award in recognition of her influential career in the arts at last year’s Oliviers.
The 2012 Awards saw Matilda The Musical win in seven categories, setting a new record; a performance of Wicked for the public in Covent Garden Piazza and live performances from Brian May, Siobhan McCarthy, Maria Friedman, Elaine Paige and the cast of We Will Rock You.
