I am pleased to see a better balance of ballet and opera for the forthcoming season's live cinema relays. I felt ballet was slightly neglected in the current season, excellent though the productions were.

It's good to see mixed bills being relayed this time, and I greatly look forward to seeing Carlos Acosta's "Carmen", hopefully with Carlos performing, and with a subsequent DVD release!!

I also look forward to Ashton's "The Two Pigeons", which would also be a welcome DVD production to add to the Opus Arte catalogue.

It will be great to see "Giselle" again, although it can never equal the last cinema performance by Carlos Acosta and Natalia Osipova. That was a phenomenon!!

Unfortunately I still live over an hours drive from the nearest screenings. And I live in the south of England .

A couple of hours after leaving my comment I was made aware that from next season I will be five minutes walk from a cinema screening. So excited to now feel included.

I am so pleased that we finally get to see some shorter ballets, even though the longer ones keep repeating (Giselle again? I love it but would rather see something new). I am also really looking forward to finally seeing some Scarlett (esp. Frankenstein).

Dear Lottie, are we mistaken or is this part of the ROH website English only? If so, that is a pity for a program broadcast, say, around the world. Wanted to send the URL to older French friends; that is a no-no.
    Kind regards, Herman

      Dear Herman

Thank you for your message. We actually have plans to deliver some of our pages in languages other than English in the not too distant future. Do watch out for developments in the coming months.

      Best wishes

I know the translation may not be completely accurate, but I'm sure they would get the giste if they can use the browser to translate the page from English to French.

If I browse a French website, Google Chrome asks me if I want it translated to English.

I live in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America. I am delighted to be able to watch your CINEMA in my city, so far away from you.
I would like to know if we are going to be so lucky to have your CINEMA 2015-2016, since it isn´t announced in this site yet.

Looking forward to the new program for next season. Really enjoyed my first year of cinema experience here in Spain/Lorca. It is a pity we cannot see the surtitle in English, as most people's Spanish cannot keep up with it. Is there any chance of seeing it in the future?? I would be so grateful and I am sure many people would agree with me.

Can anyone tell me which cinemas will be showing Covent Garden? We live not far from Orange, Avignon, Montelimar, Valence.
    Would be so grateful.

Last season I went to all the live cinema relays at Vue cinema, Carlisle, then went again to the encores on the Sunday afternoons, but this season they don't seem to be showing the encores. I feel this is a big loss, since the encores were quite well attended, and generally in a smaller arena so not taking up a larger screen. I have tried to call Vue to enquire, but, as is common these days, it seems almost impossible to get to speak to someone who can respond to an enquiry. Are you able to enlighten me?

    • Bethan Williams (Cinema Account Administrator) responded on 8 September 2015 at 4:41pm

      Dear Jakegee,
Thank you for getting in touch. It's ultimately Vue's decision as to which sites will participate in Encore screenings, however we would certainly encourage you to contact them directly to express your wish for Vue Carlisle to screen the Encores, in the hope they will decide to continue screening them at this venue. If you visit the FAQ section of the Vue website there are instructions on how to contact customer services.

We are situated in the Limousin, France postcode 87500. I have just been told by the local cinema that they are not broadcasting Romeo and Juliet next week but from the end of October only performances from Italy. You have no idea how much my band of friends looks forward to these wonderful productions which appear to have been taken away from us. Why? Is it about money? I would be pleased if you could tell us more about this decision and us and also tell us where, if anywhere, we can see your productions in France. We are so disappointed, they made winter in rural France bearable..

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 21 September 2015 at 4:15pm

      Hello Sue,

I'm happy to let you know that there are a couple of cinemas in your area screening Romeo and Juliet - http://www.roh.org.uk/search/screenings?location=Limousin%2C+France
The Cinema Le Lux in Bellac will be screening it live tomorrow night and the Grand Ecran Ester in Limoges will be screening it delayed on the 20th of October. Both of these cinemas are screening all the titles in our current season. I hope these cinemas are convenient for you and your friends and that you all continue to enjoy our productions in the coming months.

      Kind regards,
      Sarah

A big big thank you for a great addition to our time here in Spain. Looking forward to October 5th.

Bad and sad news for the 2015/16 season for people like me living in the East of France: no cinema relays in the - so far - usual cinemas (Vesoul, Guebwiller, Strasbourg) and not even in cinemas south of Karlsruhe (Freiburg/Breisgau apparently does not relay anymore!). What a bad start of the ROH cinema season for us!! :-( Was really looking forward to tonight's "Nozze" and now...nothing. Only disappointment. Two and a half hours drive to Karlsruhe is simply out of question as well as driving to cinemas near Geneva (CH) or near Paris. Really, really disappointed...No words for this!
    Sad regards, Annette

      Dear Annette,

I'm sorry for your disappointment but I have some good news for you!

In Alsace we are screening in the city of Dorlisheim, in the cinema Le Trefle which I hope is convenient for you. We are also expecting an update by the end of the week from our French distributors as to possible screenings in Strasbourg. Please keep an eye on our cinema website for the most up-to-date screening information as new cinemas come on board right throughout the season - http://www.roh.org.uk/cinemas

We have enjoyed performances over recent years but disappointed to discover there are no cinemas for this season near to me (Lucon France.) Previously we had a choice of Lucon, La Roche sur Yon,, La Tranch sur Mer and La Rochelle. This year ...nothing within reasonable travel distance. Why?

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 5 October 2015 at 11:45am

Our French distributors are still booking in cinemas in these areas, as well as across France, and I've been assured by them that there will be further cinemas confirmed within the next ten days, which I hope will be in more convenient locations to Lucon. We will be updating our cinema website as soon as the information is to hand so please do check back - http://www.roh.org.uk/cinemas

    Dear Lottie,
I went to see La nozze di Figaro in my local cinema last night, The production was marvellous and the singing magnificent.
However, there were no subtitles shown on screen, which took considerably from my enjoyment.
Was this a problem coming from the Royal Opera House or was it the fault of my local cinema operator here in Ireland?

    Best wishes,

    David

    • Ellen West (Head of Product Management) responded on 6 October 2015 at 10:23am

      Dear David

This would have been a problem with your local cinema. Could you let me know where you were watching and we can follow up.

  32. Robert MacLachlab responded on 6 October 2015 at 4:13pm Reply

We too had the same problem trying to watch Figaro with no subtitles. This was in a cinema in Malmesbury. At the interval we asked the operators if they could check to see if subtitles were available and they were absolutely adamant that Covent Garden did not transmit subtitles. I was equally adamant that they did!

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 6 October 2015 at 5:48pm

      Dear Robert,

You are correct; we did indeed transmit subtitles last night. I'll get in touch with the cinema in the hopes that this issue can be rectified before our next screening.

Wonderful performance of Figaro. A bit confused about the non appearance of Anita Hartig. Was she ill, did I miss an announcement? Her replacement was excellent. Odeon Cinema in Swansea did not have the usual mini programmes?!

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 7 October 2015 at 12:20pm

      Dear Jenny,

There was indeed an announcement, made by Simon Callow, that unfortunately Anita Hartig was ill on Tuesday night but I agree that her replacement was excellent! Thanks for letting us know that you didn't receive the cast sheet at Odeon Swansea. We'll remind them to distribute them in future, especially as we know how much our cinema audiences appreciate receiving them.

      Kind regards,
      Sarah

  34. Judy Francis responded on 8 October 2015 at 4:51pm Reply

No subtitles for Figaro at Harlequin Redhill either. Also sound was out of synch with vision virtually entire performance. Management adamant this was all down to RoH transmission. Spoilt what should have been a wonderful evening!

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 9 October 2015 at 12:35pm

      Dear Judy,

I'm very sorry for your disappointment on Monday evening. I don't know what caused the sync issue at the Harlequin but I do know that if the problem was with our stream then all the cinemas taking part in the relay would have had the same problem. We are in contact with the Harlequin now to find out what happened and work on a solution for the next time.

      Kind regards,
      Sarah

I’m an opera fan living in Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina and I use to watch all the live relays from ROH at the local Cinestar cinema.

Unfortunately many shows are cancelled because of “technical problems”: according the cinema staff the signal isn’t good.

So no Figaro. Last year no Don Giovanni nor Due Foscari, just to mention the first that come to my mind.

    Kind regards

      Dear Manlio,

I've been told by our distributors that the Cinestar in Mostar and Bihac are both screening the rest of our cinema season live. The next opera screening at Mostar will be Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci on the 10th of December.

      Dear Linda,

As of yet we have no cinemas in the Sarasota area confirmed to take our screenings this season but that is not to say that it won't happen. I'd encourage you to speak to your local cinema directly as sometimes if the cinema realises there's a demand then they may screen our broadcasts. I'm also checking in with our distributors there to see if anything can be done.

I have just seen the mixed ballet programme including the superb Carmen. I was so looking forward to seeing it again on the local live relay but I can't make that evening. Do all cinemas only show it on the same night and will it come out on DVD.?

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 2 November 2015 at 9:59am

      Dear John,

All the cinemas screen the Live performance on the 12th but depending where you are in the country some cinemas will also be showing an Encore of this performance on Sunday the 15th of November. You can search for your nearest cinema by typing your postcode into our search engine - http://www.roh.org.uk/cinemas

If you then click on the red markers that appear a screen will pop up telling you which dates this particular cinema is showing the performance on. I hope you're able to catch a later broadcast.

      Best wishes,

      Sarah

Will the US cinemas that showed Romeo and Juliet be showing the next ballet in cinema? I don't see any listings for future ballets.

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 9 November 2015 at 9:42am

      Dear Michele,

Many of them will. If you insert your postcode/town into our cinema website search engine a map appears with the cinemas in your area. Here's a search I did for the USA - http://www.roh.org.uk/search/screenings?location=USA

You can then search for the title you'd like to see by selecting it from the list on the left hand side of the screen. Zooming in on the map will make more of the red markers visible. I hope this helps.

      Best wishes,

I saw Romeo and Juliet in Carpentras where there seems to be a sort of local (French) Royal Ballet fan club. Delightful experience and no parking problems either! If you don't know your way around the complicated one-way system, just aim for the old hospital or the Bibliothèque Inguimbertine. Meanwhile, back in London, why don't the "Encore" sessions show up for London (or anywhere else)? I can't attend on Thursday 12 !! HELP

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 12 November 2015 at 10:13am

      Hello there,

If you check the website after the live screening tonight then it will be easier to spot the encores as the live screenings won't be appearing anymore. The central London cinemas tend not to screen the encores for numerous reasons so you may have to expand your search out a little further. If you let me know your postcode I'd be happy to search for your nearest cinema playing the encore on Sunday.

Also, thank you for your feedback on the screenings in Carpentras - that's great to hear!

HELP! The cinema relay of your ROH ballets starting with the Quadruple program has three incongruous theater location specifications here in Illinois. The iPic Theater people in the town of Bolingbrook, IL located in the Promenade of Bolingbrook Shopping Center say they are not showing the ballets. Very important: The Promenade of Bolingbrook is NOT located on Route 53 as the Google maps specify on your Web page. Simply, tell me what is the name of the theater near Naperville, IL 60564 that is carrying your relay on Sunday, Nov.15, 2015. Thanks...

      Dear Sheila,

My apologies for the delay in coming back to you about this. Thank you for the info on the iPic Theater's address. I am going to update our map now. As for our screenings there they will be showing The Nutcracker at 2pm on December 13th. They are also scheduled to screen the Quadruple bill on January 3rd but are not advertising this on their website yet. I will check in with the cinema and ask them to confirm that this is indeed taking place.

      Best wishes,

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 17 November 2015 at 2:26pm

You're correct Sheila. Due to the time difference between the UK and USA, as well as programming decisions at the cinemas, there is a delay in the screenings.

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 14 December 2015 at 9:41am

      Dear Holly,

I'm sorry for the confusion. Due to programming reasons some cinemas (such as your local one in Tolentino) are screening the 2009 version of The Nutcracker and I can confirm that they're screening on the 15th. I'm very disappointed that the cinema are not making our audience aware of this fact and I will contact our distributors in Italy to rectify this. We're not currently screening in Studio 123, however we would always encourage customers to approach cinemas directly to express their wish to screen ROH at their venue, as in the past cinemas have been known to participate in ROH screenings due to public demand.

    Dear Sarah,

We saw Nutcracker at the Vue Cinema in Newbury (UK) yesterday. A delight.

One small niggle you might want to look into. The sound was very slightly out of sync with the images.

We could only detect this when Darcey Bussel and the other presenter were speaking and it was only just noticeable, but noticeable it was. We told the cinema manager who came to listen, but did not detect the problem; this was I think because he stood at the entrance to the auditorium, which at the Vue is next to and at one end of the screen. from where It's hard to see the image clearly.

This did not affect the quality of the ballet as it would be impossible to detect watching the orchestral players, far less the dancers. Even so, we though you ought to know. We would also like to know whether this is a problem at the Vue cinema here (the manager thought not, as they simply receive the feed and project it) Or was it a problem with the broadcast at your end? Or is it a post-production problem?

I look forward to your response. Thank you and Happy New Year!

    Francis Cubitt

    • Sarah Walsh (Cinema Account Coordinator) responded on 4 January 2016 at 3:21pm

      Dear Francis,

My apologies for the long delay in coming back to you on your query. Thanks for letting me know about Vue Newbury. The manager is correct when he said that they simply receive the feed and project it (there is no post-production done as it's live) but this sync issue was definitely a local problem (otherwise all cinemas across our network would have been impacted). I'll check in with the cinema and suss out what went wrong but it sounds like the projector was slightly off.

Regarding your question on subtitles for Boris Godunov - we will certainly be broadcasting subtitles for the relay and there will be two tests before the screening for the cinemas to test their equipment, so unless something very drastic happens there will be subtitles for the opera!

Hi. Same question as the previous one.

Will there be subtitles/surtitles at the Vue Cinema in Newbury, Berkshire for Boris Godunov on 21 March?

I've already asked someone at Covent Garden and someone at Vue, with no answer from either.

In my view (and I've heard the whole Ring cycle three times, so I do know a bit about this matter!) there is no point going to an opera if one doesn't know what's going on.

Your previous correspondent Sarah Walsh was brave to take teenagers at all; no subtitles can't have made it easier - though teenagers' reactions to the unfamiliar can often surprise and delight us.

In the UK the encore screenings (which are indeed a repeat of the live) usually take place the following Sunday at 2pm. However, not all cinemas who show the live choose to show the encore. If you click the titles in the encore column on the page with the map then you will be able to see which cinemas are screening which encore title. I'm afraid you're going to have to travel a bit to find an encore screening. The Connaught Cinema is showing the Giselle encore but as of now that's the only one they have scheduled. Both Chichester at New Park and the Odeon Tunbridge Wells are screening all remaining encores of this season, but like I said, they aren't particularly close to you. It might be worth mentioning to your local cinema that encore screenings would be welcome as they may be persuaded to screen them if they realise there's an audience!

  77. Hello there!
I went to see a brilliant live cinema relay of Le nozze di Figaro on October 5th 2015 and then another equally brilliant relay of Les Contes d’Hoffmann on November 15th 2016 and I was wondering if there was any possible way of purchasing the performances on DVD because I'd absolutely love to see them again!
    Kind regards,
    Pip

      Hi Pip,
I'm happy to say that 16/17 production of Hoffmann should be released on DVD. At the moment, there are no plans to release the 2015 recording of Le nozze di Figaro. All announcements are made via our website and on our social media channels, so do keep an eye out for updates.
      All best wishes,
      Rose
