ROH LIVE Cinema Season 2012/13 opens this month
Swan Lake begins a season that will see productions broadcast to 900 cinemas in 32 countries.
With The Royal Ballet and Royal Opera back on stage in Covent Garden, it’ll soon be time for the return of our popular Cinema relays.
The Cinema Season begins on 23 October with a live relay of Swan Lake and over the course of the season, our two resident companies will be beamed – in nearly all instances live – around the world to 900 cinemas in 32 countries. Watch the Season trailer.
Highlights of the coming season include The Nutcracker (allowing even those who usually celebrate Christmas in tropical heat a taste of a winter wonderland), Kasper Holten’s new production of Eugene Onegin and modern classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Tickets for all screenings can be booked at participating cinemas. See all productions being screened.
The Swan Lake screening on 23 October will star Principals Zenaida Yanowsky and Nehemiah Kish and during the intervals will feature exclusive glimpses behind the scenes at the Royal Opera House. Before curtain up watch a film that goes behind the scenes on Swan Lake film.
We filmed with a range of artists and staff from the Royal Opera House to look at the experience of coming to a cinema screening – from going backstage with the interval films, to seeing top international stars in your local cinema. Watch out for Tony Hall, Federico Bonelli, Lauren Cuthbertson and many more:
Take a look into our Broadcast Department to find out how we deal with the huge technical challenges involved in Cinema relays:
Following Swan Lake, November will see David McVicar’s production of Les Troyens screened around the world.

Really looking forward to Swan Lake. Loved going to Manon at the Opera House itself but also appreciate the opportunity to see wonderful perfomances so much closer to home!
Fabulous performance. Greetings from Ipswich.
Was the NUTCRAKER shown at the cinema in real time i.e. live not transmitted from the Royal Opera House control room? My opinion is that it was recorded and transmitted in extra time. Note your PC site. Today is 13th Dec. 2012..A no show day on line!
Why not be honest? Is this yet another sign of a corrupt society? My RYO cinema states: Live??????
Hi Graham,
The show last night in the cinemas was live, on the website the individual performance gets removed from the production page at curtain up (so it wouldn't have shown when you logged on). However, you can see a full list of previous shows (including last night's) at http://www.roh.org.uk/events/4dr5j
Thanks,
Chris
