Long-unseen footage of Margot Fonteyn performing alongside Michael Somes in a special television version of The Sleeping Beauty has been rediscovered.

The footage is of Act II, including the iconic moment when the Prince awakens Aurora from her 100 year-long sleep with a kiss.

The film, shot in 1959, will be shown on BBC Four as part of an upcoming ballet season this March, introduced by former Royal Ballet Principal Darcey Bussell.

Other broadcasts in the season include ‘Darcey’s Ballerina Heroines’, and a documentary about ballet and World War II entitled ‘Dancing in the Blitz: How WWII Made Ballet British’.

The BBC Ballet Season starts on 1 March.
