Issues relating to redemption in Wagner's Ring Cycle were examined at a recent ROH Insights Session, the final of four events taking a deeper look at the masterpiece.

Broadcaster Christopher Cook was joined by philosopher Michael Tanner and Richard Bell.

The panel discussed what they think happens after the end of the world at the climax of Götterdämmerung and who, if anyone, is redeemed at the end of the work.

At the event, Michael expressed the view that "Wagner thought when he began writing The Ring Cycle that love would save all. As he went on, he realized that in fact it ends up destroying all the characters". Richard said that, "what happens between the characters in The Ring shows that we as humans need redemption."
