Les Troyens at BBC Proms
Cast including Bryan Hymel and Eva-Maria Westbroek to perform at Royal Albert Hall.
The Royal Opera is to perform Les Troyens at the BBC Proms on 22 July 2012.
Antonio Pappano will conduct the company in the concert performance of Berlioz’s epic opera for this one-off performance. Commenting on the production, which opens in a full staging at Covent Garden on 25 June, the Royal Opera Music Director said, “It’s a war story, a love story, a guy on a mission … it’s a brilliant story! It is something I really feel personally about: its electricity, its grandeur and the incredible variety of musical forms are mind-boggling!”
The performance stars Bryan Hymel and Eva-Maria Westbroek.
Les Troyens will be the focus of two Insights sessions at the Royal Opera House on 6 June and 24 June. Director David McVicar is the subject of an In Conversation session on 24 May.
Other operatic offerings at this year’s Proms include English National Opera’s Peter Grimes (24 August, 7pm), Glyndebourne’s The Marriage of Figaro (28 August, 6.30pm), and John Adams conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Singers in a semi-staged performance of Nixon in China.

It infuriates me that, for some strange reason, the BBC Proms programme is always shrouded in secrecy until less than three months before the season begins. There will be many people who will have booked holidays or have other commitments over the summer who will find that they are unable to attend a Prom of their choice (operatic or choral). I have heard of a number of people who missed out on tickets for any of the ROH performances of Les Troyens. Had they known about the Prom, they might have been able to keep that date free. Will the operas at the Proms be sold out, I wonder?
