This Saturday, American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato will perform at the Last Night of the BBC Proms. Joyce will perform arias by Handel, Rossini and Massenet in the first half, followed by popular songs including ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’. She will also be adding her own flair to the iconic festival-closing anthem 'Rule, Britannia!'.
Joyce is a regular at the Royal Opera House, most recently performing the role of Elena in The Royal Opera's La donna del lago and will sing ‘Tanti affetti in tal momento!’ from Rossini’s opera in Saturday's concert. Watch Joyce discussing the complex character of Elena:
Joyce recently hosted a masterclass for students from the National Opera Studio in the Linbury Studio Theatre, sharing her knowledge of how to tackle some of Rossini's finest arias. Watch Joyce's masterclass on YouTube.
Joyce also took part in a Twitter Q&A earlier this year where she shared her views on opera in cinema, the challenges of getting opera to a wider audience, and how she prepares for a new role. She even revealed her dream 'pants' role!
The second half of the Last Night of the Proms will also feature the rousing 'Va pensiero' chorus from Verdi's Nabucco. An installation featuring recordings of the iconic chorus from around the world feature as part of the Deloitte Ignite festival. Watch the Royal Opera Chorus rehearsing the piece.
