Festive Treats 2011: Magical Night
A colourful new adventure for Christmas from ROH2.
A brother and sister squabble over toys in their shared bedroom – it’s a scene being played out all over the world. Once the children are asleep, however, the extraordinary happens; a fairy appears and with the tap of her wand the toys come to life. Cue mischief and fun from a cast of characters including a knight, a robot and a monkey with a grievance.
Magical Night is a charming tale choreographed by Associate Artist Aletta Collins to a long lost soundtrack by Kurt Weill. The former Red Balloon and Anna Nicole choreographer was commissioned by ROH2 to create a piece around Weill’s Zaubernacht, a piece written in the 1920s and only rediscovered in 2005. With much of the scenery and music lost, this Christmas sees a new version on stage at the Linbury Studio; the first time it has been performed in the UK.
Aletta Collins recently gave Official London Theatre a valuable insight with a Q&A while conductor James Holmes appeared recently on BBC Radio 3′s In Tune (Scroll to 1:08) to talk about the project.
