Ahead of the premiere of Robert Carsen's new production of Falstaff, take a look backstage with this gallery of rehearsal photos. The Canadian-born director’s take on Verdi’s Shakespearean opera is set in the 1950s, during a period of huge social change in Britain.

Next week we'll publish an interview with the director in which he tells us about the inspiration for his production, as well as his personal feelings on the appeal of the piece.

This gallery follows our recent appetite-whetting gallery of prop cakes adorning Sir John Falstaff's banquet.

Falstaff opens on 15 May and will be shown on BP Summer Big Screens around the country on 30 May.
