Watch our latest film; it gives a vivid sense of life behind the scenes in an orchestral rehearsal. Antonio Pappano takes the baton as the musicians and chorus prepare for the recent production of Macbeth.

Pappano explains how a conductor must learn to ‘listen on many different levels’, ‘keep balance’ and try to ‘give the orchestra a context for the music’ .

‘It’s a beautiful thing if you can achieve it!,’ he says. Watch him in action.
