The Royal Opera House’s prestigious annual Design Challenge competition gives students the opportunity to test and develop design skills, based around an opera or ballet production. The competition is open to all UK FE colleges and sixth form schools or colleges. Each participating student will work through the six stages of design using a real director’s brief, building a portfolio of their process and a final piece in one of the four categories:

Teachers will be supported by the Royal Opera House throughout the process and at our free CPD days.

The Prize

In 2017/18, the winners of the Design Challenge competition were invited to exhibit their work as part of the Opera: Passion, Power and Politics exhibition at the V&A Museum on Friday 9 February 2018.

Winners were also invited to see a matinee performance at the Royal Opera House in half term, including a backstage tour and some time with the industry professionals in the relevant ROH department.
