Vocal Warm Up: Habanera
This exercise is a great way to prepare your voice for singing the Habanera.
Habanera Warm Up
First teach the bottom line of both phrase 1 and 2 (i.e. Group 3’s line) to the whole group. Ask the whole group where the two phrases of music are the same, and where they are different. (‘she sings her song’/‘you will not tame’).
Try splitting the group into three, and sing it again as per the split below. Group 1 will pause on ‘like’, Group 2 will pause on ‘bird’ and only Group 3 will sing the whole of the phrase.
On phrase two, Group 1 will pause on ‘ever’, Group 2 will pause on ‘plead’, and only Group 3 will sing the whole phrase.
You should end up on a different chord for the words ‘song’ and ‘tame’ because of Group 3’s variation to the line.
Switch the groups around so that everyone has a turn of singing the whole line.
‘Habanera’ presents all sorts of challenges for a singer, and the song is a great opportunity to work on listening and pitching. The first two phrases are where you are most likely to come unstuck, and isolating the problem is helpful before tackling the whole song.
