The Royal Opera House is proud to be working as a partner organisation with five music education hubs in the Thames Gateway. As part of the strategic partnership from 2012 – 2015, the Royal Opera House is working with Barking & Dagenham, Essex, Havering, Southend and Thurrock music education hubs to support their work and to create musical opportunities for young people in the areas.
Take Five Summer School
What is it?
Take Five is a three day non-residential summer school for musicians aged 11 – 18 from across five Music Education Hubs in partnership with the Royal Opera House. It is an opportunity for young instrumentalists and singers from Thurrock, Barking & Dagenham, Essex, Havering and Southend to come together to develop skills in musicianship, creativity and ensemble technique alongside musicians of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Music Hub Staff.
What will you do?
Instrumentalists and singers will work together to experience the rehearsal process of staging an opera scene, will receive intensive sectional coaching with professional mentors, and will create new material, all working towards a final celebratory performance for friends and family at the Royal Opera House. All the opera extracts will be inspired by Shakespeare including sections from Macbeth (Verdi), Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten) and The Fairy-Queen (Purcell).
Who is it for?
The summer school is for anyone aged 11 – 18 living within the five areas, who either play an instrument or sing to come together with like-minded people, learn and play music together. We have places available to suit all grade levels and experience so we encourage you to apply no matter what stage you are at.
The summer school takes place in the first week of the school summer holidays on the dates below:
Thursday 23 July 2015 | 10am-5pm | Palmers College, Grays, Essex RM17 5TD
