In the build up to the opening of the High House Production Park, we staged a series of large-scale events locally in Thurrock venues as well as the Royal Opera House main stage in Covent Garden. Community-led, but performed to professional standards, these productions bring together Royal Opera House artists with local young people and residents, on a creative journey that culminates in showcase celebrations, attracting huge audiences.

The preparation for these events involves year-long programmes of workshops with local community members in creative writing, composition, singing, drama, dance, prop and costume-making, scenery and set design, lighting and make-up.

Past Projects

A seasonal concert with the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus, Thurrock Youth Orchestra and and other local choirs and musicians.

Members of the ROH Thurrock Community Chorus sang with the Royal Opera Chorus for the first time for two performances. The new National Skills Academy in Purfleet was the venue for the first concert, while the second took place in the elegant setting of the Paul Hamlyn Hall at the Royal Opera House. The repertoire for both evenings included well-loved operatic numbers by Verdi, Bizet, Rossini, Sullivan and Copland, among many others.

  • Ludd and Isis, December 2010

To celebrate the launch of the new High House Production Park and Royal OperaHouse Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop in Purfleet, the Education team in Thurrock worked with over 1,000 people from the area – school children, students and residents of all ages to create the spectacular opera, Ludd and Isis.

The production was a huge success and this is largely down to the generosity of spirit and time from dedicated staff and countless local people, who contributed to the creation of the work over a period of 15 months.
