All Together Opera was a three year programme run by the Royal Opera House for adults aged over 65 living in Camden and Westminster to engage in singing and opera and promote well-being. The programme has now finished and our findings and lessons learnt will be added to this page soon.
The project focussed on active engagement in the community and supporting older people to enjoy and experience opera.
Through partnerships with local sheltered housing associations and lunch clubs, we delivered singing sessions in community venues across Westminster and Camden. These are delivered by professional singers with expertise in working in community settings and often culminate in a sharing either at the Royal Opera House or in the venue itself.
We also took the best practice to create an All Together Opera company, meeting regularly and performing locally.
'I started off doing this as a bit of fun, to help me with loneliness, but this has become something I care about, that I want to do well; I want to try my best.'
'I felt happy and relaxed which surprised me. I felt proud of the whole group and what we had achieved.'
'My self esteem has grown and I'm amazed that I could do this at the age of 78, having never sung like this before.'
'I'm surprised to have the chance joining different people of different cultures. Very interesting. I'm proud to be here at Royal Opera House.'
'I learnt how to breathe. How to communicate with people I've never met before. I felt happy singing.'
