David Makhateli

Principals
David was born in Georgia, he trained at the Tbilisi State Choreographic Institute and The Royal Ballet School. He has won awards at the Prix de Lausanne (1992), the International Diaghilev Ballet Competition (1992) and received a diploma at the Concours International de Danse de Paris. He has danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and throughout Europe Japan, China, Central America and the USA, and has undertaken masterclasses for Tbilisi State Choreographic Institute and National Ballet of Panama.
In 1996 he joined Houston Ballet, becoming a Principal in 2001. In 1998 he danced Albrecht in Nina Ananiashvili’s Giselle with the Company. His repertory includes leading roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Etudes, Solitaire, Gloria, Concerto, Theme and Variations, Symphony in C, The Four Temperaments, Sinfonietta, Without Words, In the middle, somewhat elevated and La Sylphide.
In 2003, as a Guest Artist he made his Royal Ballet debut as Des Grieux in MacMillan’s Manon and Romeo in his Romeo and Juliet. In September 2003 he joined The Royal Ballet as a First Soloist and was promoted to Principal in September 2007.
His Frederick Ashton repertory includes The Prince in Cinderella, Aminta in Sylvia, Richard P Arnold in Enigma Variations, the centre couple in Symphonic Variations, White Couple in La Valse and the Queen of Air’s Consort in Homage to The Queen. He has also danced Prince Fortuné, Prince Desiré and the Italian Suitor in Natalia Makarova’s production of The Sleeping Beauty, Prince Florimund, Russian Prince, French Prince and Florestan in the Monica Mason and Christopher Newton production of The Sleeping Beauty, Colonel ‘Bay’ Middleton in MacMillan’s Mayerling, the title role in John Cranko’s Onegin, the Prince in Peter Wright’s production of The Nutcracker, Sanguinic in George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Pas de trois in Ballet Imperial, Stravinsky Violin Concerto and Symphony in C. He has also danced Solor in La Bayadere and as part of the 2nd Principal Couple in Emeralds.
